Whether your child is preparing for the 11+ or SATs, spelling, punctuation and grammar can feel tricky and stressful — especially when rules aren’t clear and mistakes cost marks.
In our SPaG Club, each concept is broken down clearly, practised step by step, and reinforced with guided tasks, helping children feel confident, capable and ready to tackle any assessment.
Children develop more reliable use of core SPaG rules in both practice and assessed tasks.
Many students achieve higher-level outcomes, often progressing beyond expected standards and working at greater depth.
Improved sentence and paragraph construction, leading to more expressive, higher-quality writing.
Word classes
Examine how nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, determiners and prepositions function within sentences, and how they contribute to effective communication.
Punctuation
Use punctuation marks — including commas, apostrophes, speech marks, colons, semi-colons, hyphens and brackets — to organise ideas, clarify meaning and guide the reader.
Verb tense mastery
Secure the correct use of past, present and future tenses, including progressive and perfect forms. Focus on maintaining consistency and recognising common errors to strengthen written accuracy.
Spelling patterns
Study plurals, prefixes, suffixes, homophones, root words and high-frequency exceptions. Emphasis is on understanding patterns and applying rules in writing, rather than rote memorisation.
Sentence construction
Develop control of conjunctions, adverbials and clause structures to link ideas, improve cohesion and create emphasis within and across sentences.
Vocabulary development
Explore word families, synonyms and antonyms, and how adding prefixes and suffixes changes meaning. Apply this knowledge to select precise and effective language.
